50,000 communities in the provinces of Margibi, Montserrado and Bong. Other target groups are local social organizations and policy-makers.
The DCR is active in the provinces where the effects of the war are the most tangible.
The social structures of the communities have been severely disrupted. A whole generation of children have never been to school, and therefore do not stand a chance on the labour market. The unemployment rate here is high. A great deal of farming expertise was lost as a result of the prolonged war. As a result, and as a result of conflicts about land ownership and rising food prices, many people find it difficult to support themselves.
The presence of the UN peacekeeping force (UNMIL) ensures stability in Liberia. Because the situation is now calm, the presence of the UN peacekeeping force has been under discussion for some time. The possible departure of this force may cause new problems in the short term, especially because the government continues to be a weak link. Because poverty among the population is not being alleviated, people lose faith in government policies. Widespread corruption forms a major threat to the country’s economic growth and stability.
An increasing number of social organizations have sprung up in Liberia over the past few years, and many communities have now gained experience with rehabilitation activities.
The DCR focuses on strengthening these civilian initiatives and the collaboration with the local authorities and local social organizations. We focus on the following activities: creating educational facilities for children and agricultural training courses for adults, setting up a credit system so that people can start their own small business and assisting the communities in the areas of local government and management.
In Liberia we work together with such organizations as: The Development Consortium - Liberia (TDC-L), Africa 2000 Network, National Adult Education Association of Liberia (NAEAL), THINK, the European Commission, United Nations Development Plan (UNDP), Multi Stakeholder Forum for Urban and Peri Urban Agriculture in Liberia, the Management Steering Group (MSG) and the Agricultural Coordination Committee (ACC).
